Annemarie Mason, The Heart Behind Kiara Cosmetics

When Annemarie Mason founded Kiara Cosmetics in 2017, she was 28 years old, working from the spare room of her rental home. She had no investors and not even a car of her own; just determination, belief, and a borrowed car from her parents to get around and meet customers in those early days.

What she did have and what remains at the core of her business is conviction: in herself, in the brands she represented, and in the idea that beauty could be a force for good.

Eight years later, that belief has evolved into one of New Zealand's most respected beauty distribution businesses. As the exclusive New Zealand partner for RevitaLash Cosmetics and Déesse PRO, Kiara Cosmetics has built a reputation for combining professionalism with purpose, leading the industry through authenticity, education, and heart.

FROM LOST TO FOUND

Raised on Aucklands North Shore by hardworking parents, Annemarie admits she didn't have a clear plan when she left school. "I was a good student, but I never really knew what I wanted to do," she recalls. After a short stint at Inland Revenue, she found herself modelling for a doctor's training session on IPL, an experience that unexpectedly changed everything.

"I was self-conscious about my skin, growing up with cystic acne, scarring, and freckles. As I lay on the bed listening to the trainer explain all the things this IPL machine could do, I was fascinated," she says.

The rep encouraged her to study beauty therapy, and before long Annemarie was immersed in anatomy, skin function, and the power of helping people feel confident in their own skin.

After working her way from junior therapist to salon manager, she encountered RevitaLash Cosmetics at a beauty expo in 2011.

"I've always had really short lashes, so yes I was amazed at what this product claimed to do. But What truly stayed with me was the story behind the brand. I remember noticing the pink ribbon on the box and learning that RevitaLash was created out of love, from a husband supporting his wife through cancer. That sense of purpose and meaning in beauty resonated with me deeply, even back then."

THE LEAP OF FAITH

After several years working as a beauty therapist, Annemarie moved into beauty and medical device sales, spending four years with a large international corporation. The role gave in invaluable experience, but over time, she found herself craving something more meaningful. Her corporate career had sharpened her skills, but she missed the connection and purpose that first drew her to beauty therapy.

Having long admired RevitaLash Cosmetics, a brand she had come to know well throughout her career, she felt an undeniable pull when the opportunity arose to represent it herself.

"It wasn't something I'd planned for, but when the opportunity came up, it just felt right. I'd always loved the brand and what it represented, and something in me knew I had to find a way to make it work."

With encouragement from her partner Kawhia and business mentor Toss Grumley, Annemarie pitched her vision directly to RevitaLash Cosmetics. She wanted to represent the brand in a way that reflected its heart - through education, care, and genuine connection. To her delight, they said yes.

What followed was a whirlwind start-up chapter powered by heart and hustle. Annemarie built the business from the ground up, often wearing every hat herself in those early days... sales, marketing, customer service, and fulfilment - learning as she went and leading with heart. When investors offered funding in exchange for major control, she turned it down and instead found a way to make it work on her own.

"I didn't want to lose what made it special," she says. "I had a clear vision for how this brand could grow in New Zealand, and I didn't want to be restricted by outside investors or end up feeling like an employee in my own dream. It was about building something with heart and integrity, even if that meant doing it the hard way."

Today, that decision has paid off. What began as a one-woman operation is now one of New Zealand's most respected beauty distribution businesses. A testament to Anneamarie's persistence, instinct, and unwavering belief in doing things the right way.

VALUES THAT BUILD LEGACIES

As Kiara Cosmetics has grown, so too has the clarity of its purpose. Today, the business is guided by three principles that define not only how it operates, but why it exists; Partnership, Sharing the Love, and Raising the Bar.

Partnership sits at the heart of everything Annemarie and her team do.

"Your success is our success," she says. "We've always believed in building genuine partnerships, grounded in trust, collaboration, and shared goals. Whether it's a stockist, a supplier, or someone within our team, we're here to support each other every step of the way."

Sharing the Love reflects Kiara's commitment to connection and positivity, uplifting others, celebrating achievements, and creating a culture where kindness and community come first. Giving back has always been part of the company's DNA, woven through everything from the way the team works together to the initiatives they chmpion.

Raising the Bar represents Kiara's dedication to quality, growth, and continuous improvement.

"For us, raising the bar means constantly evolving - improving how we support our partners, how we show up as a team, and how we lead within the industry," Annemarie says.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BRAND

Behind the accolades, including receiving the Stand Out Distributor Award at the RevitaLash Cosmetics Global Conference and multiple wins at the 2degrees Auckland Business Awards, is a woman who has known both triumph and heartbreak.

In July 2020, after the first lockdown, Annemarie and her partner bought their first home with plans to run the business from the four-car garage and loft above it, both of which needed full renovations. Just days after signing the papers, before she'd even packed a single box, Annemarie found out she was pregnant with her first child.

Becoming a mother in March 2021 was one of the most transformative and challenging chapters of her life.

"The business was growing quickly, and the world still felt uncertain after lockdowns," she reflects. "I wasn't sure I was ready to add a baby into the mix, I went through a tough time with my mental health. I've always liked being in control, but motherhood reminded me that sometimes you have to loosen your grip a little, to find calm in the uncertainty instead of fighting it."

Then, in December 2022, just days before Christmas, her mum was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. The news shook her family to its core.

"In that moment, nothing else mattered, not deadlines, not sales, not the next launch," she says softly. "I would have dropped everything to be by her side. It was a reminder that people come before business."

That experience carried even more weight after losing a childhood friend, Gemma, to breast cancer in 2018. The two had reconnected later in life, and her passing at just 32 deeply affected Annemarie.

"Losing someone so young really shook me," she says. "It's part of why the causes we support mean so much to me, they're not just partnerships, they're personal."

In September 2023, Annemarie welcomed identical twin boys, just three days after launching RevitaLash Advanced PRO and three days after hosting her biggest fundraiser to date.

"I always imagined my life as a businesswoman with a family would look different," she reflects. "I tried to step back, to find some sort of balance, but being a mum to three under three erased all of that. It's a full, crazy season of life, and that's okay. You take the downtime when it comes, embrace the rest, and keep going. I love what I do, and I love being a mum."

Those back-to-back chapters of motherhood, growth, and loss reshaped how Annemarie leads and lives.

"It reminded me that success means nothing if you're not present for the people you love," she says. "Now, I work with a lot more intention and gratitude - and I try to create that same space for my team."

EMPOWER ME PINK: PURPOSE IN ACTION

Annemarie 's commitment to giving back culminated in the creation of Empower Me Pink, an annual fundraiser that unites the beauty industry and wider community in support of the PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation, New Zealand's only charity dedicated to cancer rehabilitation.

Evolving from n earlier initiative, Eat Drink Pink, the event has become a powerful reflection of what happens when compassion and purpose meet. In 2025 Empower Me Pink raised $32,400, with RevitaLash Cosmetics USA generously matching every dollar, brining the total donation to $64, I 800 for the PINC & STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation. "It's always so moving to see people from across the industry and beyond come together, all contributing to something that truly makes a difference," Annemarie says.

That spirit of giving extends beyond the event. Each October, including this Pink October, Kiara Cosmetics is helping restore lashes, brows, and confidence for New Zealanders facing cancer. For every RevitaLash® or RevitaBrow® serum purchased, the business donates a month's supply to Look Good Feel Better Z - supporting those rebuilding confidence after treatment.

"For me, it's about more than beauty. It's about helping people rediscover themselves during one of the hardest chapters of their lives," Annemarie says.

Since 2017, this ongoing partnership has seen than 12,000 products donated locally, alongside over $148,000 raised for cancer rehabilitation through Kiara's fundraising efforts.

REDEFINING SUCCESS

Ask Annemarie what she's most proud of, and it isn't the awards or even the rapid growth of the brands she represents, it's the connection, purpose, and impact behind it all.

"For me, success has always been about purpose and progress, building something meaningful, leading with integrity, and being proud of the person I am both in business and at home."

Today, Kiara Cosmetics is home to a passionate team of women representing world-renowned brands like RevitaLash Cosmetics and Déesse Pro. As the business continues to grow, its foundation remains unchanged, authenticity, compassion, and the belief that beauty can make a positive impact.
