Rock, Roll, or Stroke?

What was the first cosmetic you ever tried? After you discovered your mother’s lipstick, it was probably mascara. You watched your mother apply the lash darkening wonder all those times, so you knew what to do – open the tube, make a strange face, and run the brush over your lashes. And you probably haven’t changed your routine after all these years.

But how many ways to apply mascara can there be? You’d be surprised! Makeup trends are constantly changing, and with each runway season, celebrity makeup artists are finding fresh ways to reinvent the application technique. These may require some practice to find and perfect the technique that works best for your lashes, but hey, we’ve got the time now, right?

Here are some movements to try:

The Zig-Zag – moving the brush back and forth quickly over the lashes while brushing from bottom to top.

The Swirl – roll the brush away from you as you move up the base of the lash.

The Top & Bottom – coat both sides of your lashes… one side, then the other.

The Tip Coater – apply a thicker than normal amount of mascara, just at the tips with a loaded brush. Then use a clean brush to work the mascara down to the lash line. Do both sides of the lashes.

The Blink – Get the mascara brush right at the lash line and slowly blink. Pull your lashes through the wand and let them coat themselves in their natural position.

The Color Pop – go for an extra bold look with a colored primer! You might not want solid blue lashes, but what about a blue primer? RevitaLash® Cosmetics Double-Ended Volume Set is the best of both worlds: a blue-colored primer that volumizes lashes and brightens the white of your eyes while accentuating your eye color topped with a drama inducing rich black mascara with buildable application. Have as much ‘color pop’ as you desire. (Check out the combo here

The Closed Eye – No strange face required! Close one eye, then wiggle and push the mascara through your lash line – bottom to tip. (See here)

The Thirty – According to makeup artist Amy Nadine for Allure the optimum number of strokes is 30. Do quick, brisk strokes, with the brush both parallel and perpendicular to the lash line for lengthening and volumizing benefits. Bonus if you try another technique with your thirty!

The Painter – A new favorite of celebrity makeup artists is the paintbrush. Use a clean fan brush, like Bob Ross would use, coat the tip with the mascara wand and gently sweep both sides of your lashes. This will ensure no clumps and a soft, natural, no makeup lash look.
